No. 11 Women's Tennis drops season opener to UTSA

SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas-San Antonio was the venue for St. Mary's Women's Tennis' season opener versus the Roadrunners, where the Rattlers would drop a 6-1 decision Saturday afternoon.

With UTSA having the home venue, the format would be governed by the rules of Division I. This would mean in order to capture the lone doubles point, the winning side would have to win two out of the three doubles matches at stake.

The Roadrunners would take the advantage, winning the No. 1 doubles match with Junger-Rossell defeating Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman, 6-1. Hallgren-Tiwari would take the No. 3 match against Mariela Sarinana and Ally Maciel, 6-2 to give the Roadrunners the 1-0 advantage.

The lone doubles victory came from Cristina Lopez and Hannah Petersen at No. 2 doubles as the pair defeated Schickova-Karaklis, 6-0.

The Rattlers would need to rally themselves and win four of the six singles matches to capture the win.

Kaylin Kruseman would battle her way to a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 (10-8) against Schickova ,but it would not be enough as the Roadrunners would take the remaining five matches to close out the affair.

St. Mary's (0-1), ranked No. 11 nationally in Division II, will return to action on Feb. 4 when it takes on another local foe in the Trinity Tigers at Trinity.
