Rattlers snap out of shooting funk, outgun Newman

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — What a difference it makes when the ball actually goes through the net.

After a loss in which St. Mary's Women's Basketball shot 4 of 36 from 3-point range earlier this week, the Rattlers came out firing with a vengeance Saturday afternoon against Newman.

St. Mary's hit nine 3-pointers — including eight in a tone-setting first half — to outgun the Jets, 67-59, at Bill Greeley Arena.

LaBraile Fields led the way with 15 points, including a 3-for-6 clip from beyond the arc, while Kiara Etheridge and Dezirae Elias chipped in 14 points apiece. Etheridge added 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, while also increasing her career total to 658 boards. She is four rebounds away from tying Ashton Benford (662) for sixth all-time in school history.

St. Mary's (13-6, 7-4) used an explosive first quarter to take a 24-8 lead. After going 0 for 13 from 3-point range on Thursday, Fields returned to her normal sharp-shooting self, burying her first two 3-point tries to spark the hot start.

Her Rattler teammates quickly followed suit in getting their shooting groove back, going 8 for 17 from long range in the first half.

St. Mary's led 36-21 at the half, and despite being outscored 17-9 in the third never saw much of a threat the rest of the way. The Rattlers led by double figures for the majority of the second half, with the Jets getting no closer than seven for a brief stretch late in the third.

The Rattler defense forced 15 turnovers and held Newman under 40 percent from the floor (23 of 60).

St. Mary's will be back in action Thursday when it travels to take on Rogers State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Claremore, Oklahoma.
