SAN ANTONIO — A new year means a new look for the No. 15 St. Mary's Rattlers who showed off their power in their season opening route of Arkansas Tech University in a 10-6 victory inside of Dickson Stadium Friday afternoon. The game also marked the start of head coach
Charlie Migl's 30th season at the helm for the Rattlers.
After falling behind 3-0 early the Rattler bats were able to rally back behind homers by
AJ Perez,
Jack Kaiser and
Angel Vega. Perez and Vega each had 2-run homers while Kaiser had a solo shot and ended the game with three RBI.
Senior,
Jaryd Hodgson (1-0) got the nod for the opening day start and did not disappoint. Hodgson allowed only one earned run in six innings of work while striking out three batters. He made good use of his secondary pitches and found his best success when he was able to get ahead in the count.
Oscar Sepulveda managed to get the save by recording the final out, after a strong relief performance by
Trent Rousseau.
The game showed the potential of what the ball club could be in the future. Once again it will be an even mix between new transfer players and returning starters who will be taking the majority of the time for the Rattlers.
The Arksas Tech University Wonder Boys got an excellent day at the plate from Zach Klockowski who managed to reach base every time to the plate. Starter Trent Armstong (0-1) took the loss after working 4.1 innings and allowing six runs, five of which were earned.
The two teams are set to square off tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Rattler Network 2.
