Rattlers rally behind Wetzell's 24, Peterson's highlight dunks

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Yanni Wetzell scored 24, Dimitri Peterson threw down two monster dunks and the St. Mary's Rattlers got back on track with a 70-66 victory over Oklahoma Christian.

St. Mary's, which led by as many as 11 points in the first half, overcame a five-point deficit with 6:27 left to pick up the pivotal victory before a crowd of 343 at Bill Greehey Arena.

Isaiah Parros had a go-ahead dunk with 2:55 remaining to give the Rattlers a 60-59 lead that they held on to the rest of the way to improve to 3-8 in Heartland Conference play. Parros finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Trey Hall chipped in 10 points in the triumph.

Peterson finished with eight points and four boards in 23 minutes off the bench.

St. Mary's (7-12 overall) played fundamental basketball down the stretch, finishing 15 of 18 from the foul line for the game to help hold off the Eagles (4-15, 1-10) late. The Rattlers also turned the ball over just eight times, and shot 35.7 percent (5 of 14) from the 3-point line.

There was a battle in the paint between Wetzell and his counterpart, John Moon of the Eagles, who combined to score 48 points in the game. Moon matched Wetzell's 24 with 24 points of his own, as St. Mary's narrowly edged Oklahoma Christian in the paint 32-28.

St. Mary's defense limited the Eagles to just a 47.1-percent shooting clip for the game, including a 12-for-28 showing in the second half.

After leading by 11 late in the first half, St. Mary's entered the break up 40-37.

The Rattlers will be back in action Saturday, when they host Newman at 3 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena. St. Mary's will honor its softball team at halftime of the game during a ring ceremony to commemorate last season's NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional championship.
