DBU too much down the stretch for Rattlers

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — Despite a hard-fought match Saturday afternoon, St. Mary's fell to Dallas Baptist, 75-67, as the Patriots withstood the Rattlers' attack down the stretch.

St. Mary's took a two-point lead, 51-49, on a Yanni Wetzell tip-in with 8:38 remaining, but the Patriots (13-4, 7-2 Heartland Conference) answered back with a 13-1 lead to open a 10-point advantage with 5:29 left.

The deficit was too great, as St. Mary's (6-12, 2-8) could only pull within four points over the final minutes in the Heartland Conference matchup.

Four Rattlers posted double-digit figures, led by Trey Hall's 15 points and five rebounds. Skyler Brooks added 11 points and five boards, and Bryce Smith and Kriston Minor chipped in 10 points apiece.

Trailing for the entirety of the first half, the Rattlers rallied back to pull within two with 1:30 to play. After the Patriots hit a shot from the charity stripe, the Rattlers trailed by three with eight seconds on the clock. A 3-point shot from Smith would send the Rattlers to the break tied with the Patriots at 32-32.

The advantage quickly jumped back to the Patriots early in the second half, as they went on to lead by as much as six within the first six minutes.

Despite clutch shooting from beyond the arc by Smith and Hall, the Rattlers were unable to piece together their offense as they saw their biggest run of the game just minutes into the second half, when they scored eight straight to give them their first lead of the game.

Behind Smith and Hall, the Rattlers battled back to tie the game and gain the edge three times within the frame.

In the waning minutes of the game, the Patriots sealed their victory by capitalizing on Rattler turnovers and fouls, pushing their lead to as much as 10 in the final four minutes of play.

The Rattlers return to Bill Greehey Arena for a two-game homestand next week. They will host Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Newman at 3 p.m. Saturday.
