Foul trouble haunts Rattlers in loss at TAMIU

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — The St. Mary's Rattlers fell to the Texas A&M International Dustdevils, 78-72, Thursday evening after a hard-fought match that saw 53 fouls called between the two squads.

Four Rattlers posted double-digits, with Yanni Wetzell leading the way in the post area with 19 points and Bryce Smith hitting three of the team's seven 3-point shots — along with four clutch free throws — to give him 15 points. Dimitri Peterson and Isaiah Parros chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Peterson, Trey Hall, and Kriston Minor pulled down four boards apiece to contribute to the Rattlers' 23 rebounds.

Parros, Hall, Minor, Gemeny Givens, Lachie Woodhill and Stefan Wright all recorded two assists.

During the first half, the Rattlers kept within arms reach of the Dustdevils, but went to the break trailing 40-33 after a multitude of fouls and missed shots on the Rattlers' side.

Coming back from the break, the Rattlers were able to tie the game four times, going on a 13-point run in the opening four minutes of the frame. The game remained close up until the final minutes when a foul frenzy would send the Dustdevils to the charity stripe, where they would go 13 of 16 for a six-point edge to seal their 78-72 victory over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will travel up to Dallas to face Dallas Baptist University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
