Rattlers unable to complete comeback against St. Edward's

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — After trailing for all but the opening three minutes, St. Mary's men's basketball had a chance late after cutting the one-time 13-point deficit to three with 18 seconds left.

But after missing the first of two free throws on the other end, St. Edward's Frankie Mgbolu hit the second foul shot to effectively seal a 69-65 "Battle of the Saints" victory.

St. Mary's Kriston Minor misfired on a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, and Mgbolu collected the rebound and drained out the remaining time.

Minor was the game's high scorer with 17 points, just two days after scoring a season-high 26 in a loss against Texas-Permian Basin. Dimitri Peterson scored 10 off the bench, while Isaiah Parros had a game-high 10 rebounds.

St. Mary's (6-10, 2-6) held strong defensively, limiting St. Edward's (12-4, 5-3) to just 44.6-percent shooting from the field and a 33.3-percent clip from beyond the arc. But the Rattlers couldn't overcome their own offensive woes, committing 21 turnovers on top of shooting 41.5 percent from the floor and just 3 of 10 from long range. St. Mary's got to the free-throw line 35 times, but also struggled shooting from there, shooting 51.4 percent.

St. Mary's led 4-0 early, but the Hilltoppers went on a tear to lead 15-8 with 14:07 left in the half. St. Edward's led the rest of the way, including 39-29 at halftime.

The game was a rematch of last year's Heartland Conference Tournament championship game, which St. Mary's won 63-60. Minor is the Rattlers' only returning starter from last season.

St. Mary's will be back in action Thursday in Laredo, Texas to take on Texas A&M International. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
