UTPB surges past Rattlers in second half

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ODESSA, Texas — Kriston Minor's season-high 26 points were not enough Thursday, as Texas-Permian Basin tripped up St. Mary's in an 85-76 defeat.

After leading by three at the break, UTPB opened the second half on fire, storming toward an 18-point advantage by the midway point of the frame.

Minor played in 38 of the game's 40 minutes, shooting 12 of 19 from the floor. Yanni Wetzell also hit double figures in the loss, scoring 10 points to go along with five boards.

Lachie Woodhill and Skyler Brooks added nine points apiece.

UTPB led by 11 midway through the first half, but the Rattlers cut the deficit to three, 43-40, by halftime after mounting a late run.

But the Falcons (8-7, 3-4) got going again early in the second half, regaining a double-digit lead, 55-45, with 14:41 remaining. The deficit only swelled from there, as UTPB went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:10 to lead 63-45. The 18-point deficit marked St. Mary's largest of the game.

The Rattlers (6-9, 2-5) shot well from the floor, shooting 29 of 56 (51.8 percent) on the heels of a 60-percent showing in the first half. But the Falcons were even better, shooting 53.8 percent for the game — including going 9 of 18 from beyond the arc. St. Mary's made just two of eight attempts from 3-point range.

StMU won the rebounding battle 32-29, but not the turnover battle, committing 18 turnovers to the Falcons' 15.

St. Mary's will be back in action Saturday, when it travels to Austin, Texas to take on rival St. Edward's in a "Battle of the Saints" road matchup. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
