Rattlers tripped up by UTPB in 2-1 defeat

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Soccer could not keep its opening-night momentum going Saturday, as the Rattlers dropped a 2-1 contest to Texas-Permian Basin at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The game — an early-season, non-conference affair between Heartland Conference foes — featured two first-half goals from UTPB's Nathan Cotterell that proved to be the difference.

St. Mary's dominated possession early, but had nothing to show for the early effort as the Falcons jumped to a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes. St. Mary's settled down defensively and cut the deficit in half on a free kick from Aaron Dunks with about eight minutes left in the first half.

But the Rattlers could not put the equalizing goal in the net in the second half, missing several quality looks to suffer their first loss of the year.

Dunks' unassisted goal marked his first of the season.

St. Mary's outshot Texas-Permian Basin 14-10 in the game, with both teams logging six shots on goal. Rattler goalkeeper Jack Moore had four saves.

The Rattlers will be back in action Friday, when they travel to Colorado to take on Colorado Mesa at 8 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.
