Florida Tech spoils Lady Rattlers' season opener, prevails 2-0

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Soccer began the 2015 season at home against the Florida Tech Panthers, falling 2-0 on a night more than 500 people packed the stands to kick off the fall sports season.

The afternoon began with fans enjoying the Gold Rush festivities throughout The Park at St. Mary's, where students, faculty and staff gathered to enjoy free food, water activities and other giveaways.

Once play began, the Panthers (1-0-0) controlled possession through most of the first half, creating numerous opportunities that led to a lead they would not relinquish. After over 30 minutes of play in the half, Florida Tech was able to capitalize on a goal from Christina Aubrey.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, St. Mary's began the second with a brief flurry creating some scoring oportunities. That was until the Panthers tacked on an insurance goal in the 60th minute off an Aubri Williamson goal.

Alyssa Taramona (Sr., Forney, Texas) made a game-high nine saves, while Kristal Williams (Jr., Ponder, Texas) had two shots on goal.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back as it goes on the road to play against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 11 in Laredo, Texas.
