Botello sets tone in season-opening victory over WTAMU

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Just over 15 minutes into the 2015 campaign, Pato Botello (Fr., Helotes, Texas) made the goal of the year with a bicycle kick from 10 yards away en route to a 2-1 opening night victory over the West Texas A&M Buffaloes.

"The ball was right there," Botello said of his first career goal. "I said, 'If you don't try, you're not going to score.' It was a little bit lucky, but it went in."

St. Mary's kept the pressure on its foes from West Texas throughout the first half, ending with a goal from Kiernan Akers (So., Converse, Texas) in the 45th minute.

The Rattlers had a solid performance from their goalkeeper Jack Moore (Jr., Lewisham, London), as he recorded two saves on the night in his first start with the program.

In the 86th minute of the match, West Texas A&M got on the board courtesy of a Conrod Goulbourne goal, during which a mysterious drone hovered over Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The victory marks only the second time St. Mary's has defeated the Buffaloes, improving the Rattlers' all-time record against WTAMU to 2-17-2.

Saturday, the Rattlers will be back in action against Texas-Permian Basin at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
