#2 Midwestern State outlasts Rattlers

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — It was a heated affair at Sigma Beta Chi Field as No. 2 Midwestern State handed St. Mary's a 3-1 loss Sunday afternoon.

The 25th minute saw MSU strike for first with a goal directly from a corner kick by Ben Clarvis.

StMU responded with a goal from Juan Sanchez (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) who netted his first goal of the season in the 37th minute. The play unfolded when a free kick from Alex Gonzalez (R-Jr., McAllen, Texas) ricochet in the box. Sanchez seized the opportunity and managed to get a touch on the ball, depositing the equalizer to the back of the net.

At the start of the second half, the Mustangs regained control of the contest courtesy of a goal in the 48th minute by Albert Rodriguez.

Shortly after, Patricio Botello Faz (Fr., Helotes, Texas) had two consecutive opportunities to equalize. His first shot bounced off the right post and then on the rebound, keeper Richard Goss saved Botello's second shot.

Midwestern State put the game out of reach with a goal in the 56th minute.

Three yellow cards and 17 fouls were committed by both teams as tempers flared late in the contest.

St. Mary's will look to regroup as it begins Heartland Conference play on the road against Lubbock Christian on Oct. 1.
