Rattlers overcome storm, deficit in 3-1 victory over Greyhounds

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Thunder, lightning, rain and an early deficit were not enough to slow down the St. Mary's Rattlers as they handed Eastern New Mexico their first loss of the season by a final of 3-1, at Sigma Beta Chi Field Friday night.

The start to the match was delayed an hour and a half originally due to lightning in the area. Once play began, the Greyhounds (3-1-2) pounced on their first opportunity, netting a goal in the first minute on a Rattler team that had not allowed a goal in their previous two matches.

In search for a spark, the Rattlers (4-3-0) got what they were looking for in the 54th minute. An equalizing goal from 30 yards by Wren May (Jr., Brisbane, Australia) pulled the Rattlers even. The goal, assisted by Arik Arredondo (Fr., Austin, Texas), was May's first of the season.

After the Snakes drew a foul in the box in the 64th minute, it was defender Aaron Dunks (Sr., Manchester, England) who deposited the game winning penalty kick into the back of the net, completing the Rattler comeback. With the goal, Dunks is currently the team leader with three on the year.

Clinging to a one-goal advantage, St. Mary's got some insurance in the form of an Arturo Sanchez (So., Dallas, Texas) goal. It was a play that was executed to perfection with Jack Wolf (Sr., Richardson, Texas) providing a low cross in front of the net to a streaking Sanchez.

St. Mary's has outscored its opponents 6-1 in their last three contests. The Rattlers will look to continue that success against Midwestern State on Sunday, 1 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
