@StMUvolleyball blanks OPSU for key conference win

By Joseph Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball pulled through with its first home victory of the year against Heartland Conference foe Oklahoma Panhandle State University by a score of 3-0.

The Rattlers improved their record to 3-9 on the year and were able to pick up their first conference win of the year. OPSU has now fallen to 1-11.

The Rattlers were led by their quartet of newcomers who all had standout games. Sophomore transfer student Maddi King led the Rattlers in digs with 12 while also being tied for the lead in kills with nine along with freshman Channing Hankins.

Hankins' strong performance was also matched by freshmen setters Ariana Flores and Maddy Walsh. Flores had a stellar performance with 14 assists and 11 digs.

It was a slow start for St. Mary's, which trailed the first set by a score of 10-2. But the Rattlers were able to battle back and take the first set by a score of 25-18. St. Mary's then used this momentum to carry itself through the remainder of the match.

The Rattlers were able to outperform OPSU with their bold defensive play. The Rattlers amassed 13 blocks while OPSU could only muster five. The Rattlers also had more digs than their foe by a margin of 48-41.

Megan Isbell was a force at the net with seven total blocks and countless other tips. King also chipped in six blocks of her own.

St. Mary's Volleyball will be back in action on Sept. 29 against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Rattlers will be looking for redemption from their 3-0 loss to the Javelinas from earlier in the year.
