Gurinsky, defense power Rattlers to victory over Saints

SAN ANTONIO — It was an all San Antonio matchup as Our Lady of the Lake paid a visit to Sigma Beta Chi Field on Thursday to take on St. Mary's for the coveted Halo Trophy. The Rattlers walked away victorious 2-0, courtesy of a pair of goals from Rachel Gurinsky.
 
Gurinsky (So., San Antonio) came into the match with two goals in the season. By the end of the match, she doubled that amount with two impressive goals that powered the Rattlers past the Saints.
 
In the 34th minute, Gurinsky received a pass from Brittney Lacek (Sr., Gillette,Wyo.) and deposited a shot low and out of the reach of the keeper.
 
The match was put away in the 71st minute when Gurinsky created a Saints turnover leading to a one-on-one situation with the opposing goalkeeper, Gabriele Lopez. Gurinsky played it patiently, drawing Lopez away from the net and placing a shot inside the near post.
 
In addition to Gurinsky's exploits, the Rattler defense recorded their third consecutive clean sheet behind the goalkeeping tandem of Alyssa Taramona (Sr., Forney, Texas) and Caitlin McCarrell (So., Flower Mound, Texas).
 
The back line of St. Mary's, Megan Tomlin (Jr., Dallas, Texas), Nicole Faris (So., Flower Mound, Texas), Kaitlyn Judge (So., Lubbock, Texas), and Katy Primeaux (So., Keller, Texas) stood tall, holding the Saints to only three shots on goal, on their way to claiming the Halo Trophy.
 
St. Mary's will finish up its homestand against Huston-Tillotson on Saturday at 7:30.
