Rattlers silence red-hot Lions behind Lacek's first-half goal

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Soccer used a first-half goal and stingy defense down the stretch to snap Texas A&M-Commerce's three-game winning streak with a 1-0 triumph Saturday evening.

Brittney Lacek scored a dazzling goal in the 26th minute, using nifty footwork to race down the field and find the left corner of the net from 18 yards out before a home crowd of 257 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Alyssa Taramona and Caitlin McCarrell combined for the shutout, as the duo recorded three saves on the night. Taramona got the start, and improved to 3-2-0 on the season.

The loss dropped Texas A&M-Commerce to 4-2 on the season, stifling a Lions team that had outscored opponents 17-2 this season. St. Mary's improves to 3-2 on the season, with Saturday's victory marking its first at home.

With 10 minutes left, Kristal Williams took a beautiful pass from Lacek and nearly delivered a crushing, clinching goal, but it went off the post to keep the lead at 1-0. It turned out St. Mary's wouldn't need it, as Texas A&M-Commerce was not able to pose a comeback threat down the stretch.

The Lions outshot St. Mary's 10-7, but managed just three shots on goal to the Rattlers' four.

St. Mary's will be back in action Monday, when it hosts Texas A&M International at 4 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
