Rattler comeback denied as ASU prevails late

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — A frenzied comeback attempt was not enough for St. Mary's on Tuesday, as Women's Soccer fell 3-2 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Rachel Gurinsky scored off a deflection with about three minutes remaining to slice a two-goal lead in half, but Angelo State held on in the waning minutes to improve to 4-0-1 on the season.

St. Mary's dropped to 2-2, snapping a two-game road winning streak.

ASU's Haley Mendel broke open a 1-1 game with the go-ahead goal when she broke through the back line of the Rattlers' defense on a long run with five minutes left in the first half, finding the top-left corner of the net after drawing Rattler goalie Alyssa Taramona out of the box on a 1-on-1 situation.

Demi Tsambasis provided an insurance goal when she scored in the 66th minute to put Angelo State up 3-1.

Earlier, in the 18th minute, St. Mary's Kristal Williams scored the equalizer after the Rambelles went up 1-0 early in the game, taking a Kaitlyn Judge cross for her second goal on the season.

St. Mary's was outshot 15-7 in the contest.

The Rattlers will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce.
