Rattlers return to Greehey Arena in tonight's home opener

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's Rattlers volleyball team will play its home opener tonight in a Heartland Conference matchup against the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons at 7 p.m.

The Rattlers will be returning from a road trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, where the team managed a 2-1 start to the season. St Mary's had a total game count of 7-4 while on the road trip.

The Rattlers are looking to improve on an 11-14 season last year, but proved to be a solid home team with a record of 7-7. There are several new players to be featured with St. Mary's having graduated five seniors last year.

To combat this the Rattlers brought in four new faces, who have already made an impact. Maddi King, a sophomore transfer student from the University of Central Oklahoma, leads the team in kills with 26. Channing Hankins has started her collegiate career with a bang with 21 kills, which is third best on the Rattler team. Hankins is also second on the team in digs with 29.

One of the main concerns for the Rattlers coming into the season was replacing the program's all-time digs leader Victorria Martinez. However, senior Tori Estrada has stepped up to the task and is leading the Rattlers in digs with 44.

Also bolstering the Rattler defense is senior middle blocker Lauren Holman. Holman appears to already be in midseason form with 15 total blocks. Redshirt-sophomore Megan Isbell is also contributing steadily with 12 blocks.

St. Mary's defeated the UTPB Falcons in both of their matches last year. The Rattlers had an impressive 6-1 game count against the Falcons. The Falcons have started their season 0-4 after a tournament in San Angelo, Texas.
