Sardelich leads StMU past Newman, into 2nd round of Tournament

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Nicole Sardelich moved closer to becoming St. Mary's all-time hits leader, and the Rattlers inched closer to advancing the the Heartland Conference Tournament championship game.

No. 7-ranked St. Mary's defeated Newman 6-3 in Thursday's opening round of the Heartland Tournament, advancing to take on third-seeded St. Edward's in Friday's second round of the double-elimination tournament. First pitch is scheduled for Noon at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

Leading the charge was Heartland Conference Player of the Year Nicole Sardelich, whose 2-for-3 day leaves her two hits shy of equaling Tiffani Craft's career total of 296 hits atop the St. Mary's record books. Sardelich added an RBI and a run scored in the game.

Hannah Fields' triple sparked a six-run third inning for St. Mary's (40-9), which broke free with all six runs coming with no outs on the board. Haley Richter, Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone and Alex Rodriguez joined Sardelich in driving in a run in the inning.

Newman (17-38) made things interesting late when Kelsey Jones blasted a three-run home run to cut the lead in half at 6-3, but it wasn't enough as closer Kristi Rangel closed the door by throwing a hitless seventh inning to earn her third save of the season.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone fanned three and yielded one hit in three innings pitched. Hope Russell collected the victory in relief to improve to 15-5.
