No. 7 Rattlers advance to Heartland Tournament championship game

StMU to face SEU in the title game

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Softball will try to hoist the Heartland Conference Tournament championship trophy once again Saturday.

The No. 7-ranked Rattlers earned that right with Friday's 8-2 victory over St. Edward's, a game in which the Snakes overcame an early 1-0 deficit by erupting over the fifth and sixth innings to take firm control of the second-round matchup.

In the process, the legend-in-the-making Nicole Sardelich doubled to tie the school's all-time hits leader, tying Tiffani Craft's mark of 296 career hits. Sardelich went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored in the game.

St. Mary's (41-9) will take St. Edward's once again at 1 p.m. Saturday in the championship game at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's. St. Edward's defeated Texas A&M International 9-4 Friday evening to advance to the title game from the loser's bracket.

The Rattlers, the conference's co-regular-season champions, have won either the regular-season or postseason title 14 times over the last 15 years.

However, StMU started off sluggishly Friday, as the Hilltoppers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. But the Rattlers felt better about themselves after yielding just a single run, on a Morgan Dufour sacrifice fly to right field.

St. Mary's used a series of Hilltopper mistakes to jump ahead in the second, as LeeAnn Campos scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-1. Moments later, the inning appeared to be over when Amanda Villa struck out for the third out, but a wild pitch allowed her to safely advance to first and for Miranda Medina to cross home plate for the go-ahead run.

Hannah Fields then tripled for the second time in the tournament, bringing home Villa to make it 3-1. The Rattlers soon put the game out of hand.

Sardelich scored on a throwing error in the fifth, and Sydney Wellmann later had an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Taylor Vidrine for a 5-1 lead. Then came Sardelich's record-tying double in the sixth, a three-RBI strike to left-center field that handed the Rattlers a commanding 8-1 lead.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone struck out two and allowed four hits and one run in six innings pitched. The National Player of the Year top-10 finalist improved to 24-4 on the season.

The tournament will be broadcast live on the Rattler Network at RattlerAthletics.com/live.
