No. 7 Softball run-rules TAMIU to complete series sweep

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — After a stunning comeback win in the night cap of Thursday's doubleheader, No. 7 St. Mary's Softball made sure to leave no room for doubt in the series finale Friday with a 9-1 run-rule victory over Texas A&M International to sweep the series.

The Heartland Conference sweep has the Rattlers riding an impressive 14-game winning streak in the must-win series over TAMIU to keep them in the No. 2 spot in the league with a 31-7overall record and a 12-2 conference record.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone was once again a pain for the Dustdevils (20-19, 13-5 in conference) as she was both a danger in the batter's box and on the rubber, blasting a three-run homer to start the game while picking up the win to improve to 18-3 on the season.

After Gutierrez Touchtone's three-run shot in the first, the Rattlers would score in the next two consecutive innings and would clinch the run-rule with a three-run fifth inning.

Gutierrez Touchtone and Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) shared the team-lead in RBIs with three, each going 1 for 3.

The Rattlers took advantage of three Dustdevil errors as the only other RBI in the nine-run game went to Hannah Fields (Jr., San Antonio) off a sacrifice bunt in the fifth.

Gutierrez Touchtone tossed four innings for the win with Veronica Garcia (Jr., Austin, Texas) closing out the game with one inning pitched with two strikeouts.

The Rattlers return home to face Texas-Permian Basin in a four-game series starting with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday inside The Park at St. Mary's. The series will conclude with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday with the final game of the series being a non-conference matchup.
