Russell, No. 7 Softball dominates Texas-Permian Basin

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 7 St. Mary's Softball hit its sweet 16 Friday, sweeping its doubleheader with Texas-Permian Basin 6-1 and 7-0 with a strong performance from freshman Hope Russell and a standout day at the plate from the Rattler bats.

The two wins improved the Rattlers to 33-7 overall and 14-2 in Heartland Conference play, extending their winning streak to 16.

The Rattlers hit for the cycle in Game 1 with Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) and Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) both going yard, Sydney Wellmann (Jr., Brenham, Texas) smacking a triple and Daniele Nash (Sr., San Antonio) and Hannah Fields (Jr., San Antonio) both recording doubles in the nine-hit victory.

But it was the hill that stood out in Game 2 for the Rattlers as freshman Russell (Vidor, Texas) pitched her second career complete-game shutout in the 7-0 victory. Russell scattered seven hits in seven scoreless innings, striking out three and impressively walking none.

Russell's performance, which saw her pitch her way out of two bases-loaded situations, improved her record to 13-4 on the season.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) also threw a complete game in the series opener, striking out seven while allowing one earned run to improve her record to 19-3 on the season.

As a team, the Rattlers scored in all but four innings on the day with Vidrine going an impressive 5 for 7 over the two games with three stolen bases and three runs scored.

The eight-hit Game 2 victory saw its majority of hits produced from Vidrine, Wellmann and Miranda Medina (So., San Antonio) who all recorded two hits apiece while Game 1 had Nash tie the all-time record for hit by pitches after being pegged for the 18th time in her career.

The Rattlers complete the conference series with Texas-Permian Basin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Park at St. Mary's and will follow with a non-conference game against the Falcons at 1 p.m.
