Rattlers win third straight league title

DALLAS — It's official, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team is your Heartland Conference champions as they defeated St. Edward's convincingly, 5-1, Saturday at Southern Methodist University.

The conference crown was the third consecutive for the Rattlers as they try to improve on their unprecedented Sweet 16 run from last year.

Things looked a little unfamiliar as the No. 1 team of Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez dropped their first doubles match in conference play this year to the Hilltoppers' Brooke Hughes and Sasha Khadzhyan, 8-6.

No. 2 team of Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman and the No. 3 team of Tyra Timm and Felicity Delgado made amends as the No. 2's defeated Ivana Zecevic and Francesca Chaher 8-5 and the No. 3's downed Rafaela Haegele and Marissa Williams in a close one, 9-7.

The Snakes gained the advantage and never looked back.

The reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Year in Rong rebounded from her doubles defeat to Khadzhyan in dominant fashion with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Rong's senior counterpart Delgado would also turn in a straight-sets victory as she took the decision over Williams 6-1, 6-2.

With the match total at 4-1, Denton would step up and clinch the conference crown for her team as she won 6-1, 6-1 over Zecevic to ensure back to back-to-back-to-back titles for St. Mary's.

The win was the Rattlers' 19th of the season — and their 18th straight — to push their record to 19-1. They will now await their regional opponent, which is set to be announced Sunday. The Rattlers are in line to host next week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional as the region's top seed.
