Women's Tennis dominates Newman to advance to Heartland finals

DALLAS — Step one to the Heartland Conference Championship for St. Mary's Women's Tennis was completed in dominant fashion against Newman University 5-0 on Friday.

Despite a 30 minute weather delay, the Snakes were able to take the lead and never lost focus of the task at hand, clinching the match only two matches into singles play.

Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) continued their win streak in the Heartland Conference as they defeated Lisa Pleskan and Carissa Villaflor by a score of 8-4 at No. 1.

The No. 2 team of Jamie Lee Denton (Jr. San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston) finished off their Newman opponents Hillary Hicks and Kate Bugayenko as they cruised to an 8-2 victory.

Unlike their teammates, Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg) and Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) were locked in a tight match at No. 3 with Ariana Raga and Courtney Dold, but they were able to outlast the Jets (16-5) and pull out a 9-8 victory.

With the 3-0 lead heading into singles play, St. Mary's would only need two of six singles match to win the match.

They were able to get those two matches as the doubles tandem of Denton and Kruseman proved their worth individually with Denton defeating Dold 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Kruseman taking the victory over Hicks 6-4, 6-0.

The two wins would see the Rattlers to victory as they moved their way into the conference final to fight for their third straight Heartland Conference Championship.

The win took their record to 18-1 for a 17-game winning streak. The Rattlers advance to play rival St. Edward's for the title at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dallas.
