No. 7 Softball earns share of Heartland regular-season title

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 7 St. Mary's Softball clinched its share of the Heartland Conference regular-season title Saturday with a close, 4-2 win over rival St. Edward's to sweep the series.

The Rattlers are the regular-season champs alongside provisional conference member Lubbock Christian as both squads ended the regular season with identical 19-4 league records.

The title marks Rattler Softball's sixth straight Heartland Conference title as they improved their record to 39-9 overall.

With the doubleheader sweep over SEU Friday to start the three-game series, the Rattlers secured the right to host the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament for the third straight season, which will begin Thursday.

The title-clinching victory over SEU Saturday saw ace Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone pick up her 23rd victory on the mound with seven strikeouts against the Toppers, ending the regular season with a 23-4 record and 141 strikeouts with a 1.30 ERA.

The Rattlers gained a 3-0 lead over Toppers after scoring three runs in the third with RBIs from Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio), Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) and Amanda Villa (Sr., San Antonio).

The Toppers snaked one run in the fourth to make it a two-run ballgame and in the sixth, Alex Rodriguez (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas) picked up a needed insurance run to put the Rattlers up 4-1 leading into the Toppers' final at-bat.

The Toppers made it interesting in the seventh, scoring one run with one out to make it a 4-2 game.

A quick-thinking play from Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) gunned down a Topper at third for the second out to leave a Topper on first and second.

Gutierrez Touchtone gave the final Topper of the game a pitch that would ground out straight to Richter on first to end the tight game.

The Rattlers nine-hit victory saw two hits from Sardelich and Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) while Sydney Wellmann (Jr., Brenham, Texas) smacked her second triple on the season in the win.

The Rattlers will start the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament Thursday as the No. 1 seed. Check back with RattlerAthletics.com for developing details on the tournament.
