StMU secures right to host Heartland Tournament with sweep of SEU

With a victory Saturday, Rattlers clinch at least share of Heartland crown

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 7-ranked St. Mary's Softball took care of one piece of business Friday, and will look to take care of another Saturday.

The Rattlers swept the first two games of a three-game series against St. Edward's, winning 1-0 and 10-4 at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

The victories ensured the Rattlers (37-9, 18-4) the right to host next week's Heartland Conference Tournament, which will take place Thursday-Saturday at St. Mary's Softball Stadium.

It also leaves St. Mary's in need of one more victory to secure at least a share of the Heartland Conference regular-season title, as league-leading Lubbock Christian dropped a game to Texas A&M International on Friday to leave the Chaparrals and Rattlers tied atop the league standings entering Saturday's final regular-season game. As a provisional league member, Lubbock Christian is not eligible to host the postseason title, which is why St. Mary's has already wrapped up hosting responsibilities.

St. Mary's and St. Edward's will wrap up their series beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Friday's opener saw a pitching duel between two of the league's leaders, StMU's Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone and St. Edward's Sarah Debrow. Incidentally, it was Gutierrez Touchtone providing the only offense of the game, drilling a solo home run over the left-field wall off Debrow in the second inning for the only run of the game. Gutierrez Touchtone fanned seven and allowed four hits in the complete-game shutout to improve to 22-4 on the season.

The nightcap saw no such lull in offensive highlights, as Taylor Vidrine got things going right off the bat with a first-inning, two-run home run. Alex Rodriguez added a solo shot in the second inning as part of a four-run inning that saw the Rattlers jump to a 6-0 lead.

St. Edward's trimmed it to 6-2 in the fourth and 7-4 in the sixth, but the Rattlers tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth as the threat of rain and lightning loomed overhead.

Nicole Sardelich had two hits in the game and moved six hits away from equaling the top spot as St. Mary's all-time hits leader. Vidrine, who this season became the Rattlers' first-ever player with 10-plus home runs and 30-plus stolen bases in a season, went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, one home run and a stolen base. Hannah Fields and Amanda Villa also enjoyed multi-hit days.
