By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — No. 11 St. Mary's Baseball ran out of outs in a tough loss to Tarleton State Tuesday, 5-4, with the tying run 90 feet from home.

The Rattlers stranded the tying run on third in their final at-bat against the Texans to mark their third one-run loss against a Lone Star opponent.

The close loss drops the Rattlers to 30-11 on the season while the Texans improved to 19-18 overall.

The game looked promising for the Snakes in the second when Al Gonzalez (RS-Jr., Houston) smacked a two-run homer in his second home run on the season to give the Rattlers an early, 2-0 lead.

TSU tied it with two runs in the third and took a 5-2 lead in the fifth with a three-run homer from Texan Zach Fleet.

The Rattlers chipped away at their deficit in the sixth, scoring two runs off a sacrifice fly from Nathan Schwertner (Jr., Huffman, Texas) and a RBI-fielder's choice from Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) to make it a one-run ballgame, 5-4.

Jones doubled with one out in the Rattlers' final chance at the plate in the ninth and advanced to third on a groundout but was unable to reach home as the Texans made the final out to secure the close win.

StMU recorded eight hits off six TSU pitchers with Jones and Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) each notching three hits apiece.

Earning his first start as a Rattler, Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) tossed four innings and allowed two earned runs to be charged with the loss.

Max Heintzelman (RS-Fr., San Antonio) completed the game with four innings on the mound with four strikeouts and three earned runs.

The Rattlers are back to Heartland Conference play in their final home series of the season against UA Fort Smith starting with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m.
