No. 7 StMU stuns TAMIU with 5-run 7th inning to sweep doubleheader

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — Down four runs and down to their final out, the St. Mary's Rattlers appeared headed for almost certain defeat Thursday.

And then the seventh-ranked team in the nation went to work.

Nicole Sardelich blasted a three-run home run and Sydney Wellmann drilled a two-run shot — all with two outs — as St. Mary's Softball engineered a stirring, come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Texas A&M International.

The victory secured a sweep for St. Mary's (30-7, 11-2) in Thursday's opening-day action of a three-game series against the Dustdevils (20-18, 13-4), as St. Mary's took Game 1 7-3. The teams entered the afternoon tied for second place in the Heartland Conference, with each having entered with two defeats in league play.

Now St. Mary's will go for the full sweep when the teams finish the series with Friday's single game, which begins at Noon at TAMIU's Dustdevil Field.

Wellmann's bat and ace Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone's right arm fueled the Rattlers in Game 1, as Wellmann drove in five runs on two hits in four at-bats. Gutierrez Touchtone struck out eight in the circle and yielded just two earned runs.

The Rattler bats came out flat in Game 2, registering just a single hit over the first four innings en route to falling behind 5-0.

But Daniele Nash hit a solo home run in the fifth to get the Rattlers on the board, setting the table for the comeback scene two innings later when another pair of Rattler homers left the park.

With one away, Nash got things going again in the seventh with a single to right field. Later, with two away and Nash at first, Gutierrez Touchtone produced a pinch-hit infield single to put runners at first and second. Sardelich then came to the plate and drilled a three-run shot to left field to give St. Mary's renewed life.

Taylor Vidrine then singled to right field and stole second base, putting the tying run in scoring position for Wellmann, who cleared the bases with two-run homer to right field. Haley Richter then doubled to right field, but the inning came to an end when pinch hitter Reagan Patterson flew out to right field.

Kristi Rangel pitched a stellar 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs on no hits to help allow the Rattlers' comeback. She picked up her first collegiate victory in the process, improving to 1-0 on the season.

Sardelich finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Wellmann was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Richter and Daniele Nash also added multi-hit days, finishing with two apiece.

Gutierrez Touchtone improved to 17-3 on the season with her Game 1 victory.
