Villa hits Rattlers past Oklahoma Christian in extras

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY — St. Mary's Softball got back on track Saturday, as second baseman Amanda Villa's RBI single to left field with one out in the top of the eighth inning gave the Rattlers a 5-4 victory in extra innings over Oklahoma Christian.

Pitcher Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone forced three straight infield groundouts in the bottom half of the inning to end the game, as the Rattlers (36-9, 16-4 in Heartland Conference) managed to squeeze out one victory in the three-game series against the Eagles (24-17, 12-9).

St. Mary's continues to trail Lubbock Christian by one game for the top spot in the league standings, while the Rattlers lead Texas A&M International by two in the loss column for the right to host the Heartland Conference Tournament.

On Saturday, St. Mary's erased a 2-0 deficit in the third when Taylor Vidrine singled to centerfield to drive in two runs to even the score at 2-2. An inning later, Gutierrez Touchtone smashed a go-ahead, two-RBI home run to center to take a 4-2 lead.

Oklahoma Christian battled back in the sixth, however, tying the score at 4-4 to eventually send it to extras, where Villa's bat provided the Rattlers a much-needed victory.

Villa went 2 for 4 on the day, while Nicole Sardelich also had two of the Rattlers' 11 hits in three at-bats. Vidrine and Gutierrez Touchtone led the Rattlers with two RBIs apiece.

Gutierrez Touchtone improved to 21-4 after pitching all eight innings, where she allowed five hits and struck out three.

The Rattlers will get back to work Friday, when they begin a three-game series against St. Edward's. The series is the last of the regular season and will begin with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Friday.
