No. 6 Softball drops pair of games to Oklahoma Christian

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics

OKLAHOMA CITY — No. 6 St. Mary's Softball was dealt a pair of defeats by Oklahoma Christian on Friday that knocked the Rattlers out of the top spot of the Heartland Conference standings.

The Eagles swept the doubleheader with 2-0 and 5-4 victories, snapping St. Mary's 18-game winning streak and placing the Rattlers (35-9, 15-4) a game behind Lubbock Christian in the loss column atop the league standings.

The three-game series will wrap up Saturday with a single game beginning at Noon.

St. Mary's produced just two hits in the series-opening loss, as Sydney Wellmann and Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone were the only Rattlers to record a base hit with one apiece.

A two-run sixth inning for the Eagles broke open a scoreless deadlock and provided Oklahoma Christian all the runs it would need with ace Shea Coats fanning eight in the complete-game shutout. Gutierrez Touchtone, St. Mary's ace, suffered just her fourth defeat of the season.

The Rattler bats were similarly quiet in Game 2, as a four-run fourth inning for Oklahoma Christian handed the Eagles a 5-0 lead. The Rattlers showed life in the sixth, however, when Laura Benavidez provided a pinch-hit, three-run home run to cut the gap to 5-3. Taylor Vidrine launched a solo shot in the seventh for her 11th homer of the year, but it wasn't enough as the Rattlers fell 5-4.
