Women's Tennis takes down UAFS for 2nd straight conference title

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — It was indeed a sweet 16th win as the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team clinched the Heartland Conference regular season title with a convincing 8-1 over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

The title is the second consecutive regular-season crown as St. Mary's excellent season continued as it will try to make another trip back to the national tournament.

The win, the Rattlers' 16th in a row, was boosted by yet another doubles sweep from the San Antonio team.

The No. 7-ranked doubles team took a convincing 8-2 win as Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez defeated Abby White and Brittaney McCasin at No. 1. The No. 3 team of Tyra Timm and Felicity Delgado won by the same score line as they defeated Abby Thompson and Taylor Price.

The sweep of the doubles portion came as the No. 20-ranked doubles team of Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman beat Lindsy Pearce and Madison Carr by a count of 8-1 at No. 2.

The women would only drop one match in the remaining six on their way to victory.

Joanie Bryant was unlucky in that respect as she dropped a 6-4, 6-0 to Masa Podunavac at No. 6.

She was aided by her teammates, starting with Rong, the defending Heartland Conference Player of the Week and No. 33-ranked singles player in the nation, as she cruised to victory at No. 1 singles against White, 6-2, 6-3.

Fellow ranked singles player, No. 39 Lopez defeated McCasin without dropping a single game in the affair. Kruseman returned to the singles lineup with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Carr at No. 3.

Timm defeated Thompson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Rounding out the results, Delgado beat Pearce by a 7-5, 6-4 score line at No. 5.

The impressive St. Mary's record now stands at 17-1. The Rattlers will close out the regular season with a match vs. Tarleton State next Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. in San Antonio.
