Softball moves into 1st place in Heartland with sweep of UTPB

Victories mark 17th and 18th straight for No. 7 Rattlers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 7 St. Mary's Softball swept Texas-Permian Basin in a doubleheader Saturday, winning 6-0 and 8-0 in a six-inning run-rule to sweep the weekend's series 4-0.

And in the process, the Rattlers moved into sole possession of first place in the Heartland Conference on Senior Day, inching past Lubbock Christian after Oklahoma Christian dealt the Chaparrals a pair of defeats this weekend.

The Rattlers, winners of 18 straight, will get a look at the red-hot Oklahoma Christian Eagles themselves in a pivotal three-game series beginning Friday in Oklahoma City.

Against UTPB (6-35), the Rattlers (35-7, 15-2) came out firing in both games, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 and a more daunting 6-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. The opener counted toward the Heartland standings while the second game was a non-conference affair.

While the Rattlers prevailed both times, the Falcons were effective in keeping StMU's bats at bay for the majority of Game 1. St. Mary's tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly from Haley Richter in the third, but still led just 2-0 entering the fifth.

That's when the Rattler bats got going, as Richter launched a solo shot to left field as part of a two-run fifth inning, and Laura Benavidez and Nicole Sardelich both had RBI doubles in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone, one of eight seniors honored on the day, struck out four in a complete-game shutout to improve to 20-3 on the season. She yielded seven hits and walked two in the game.

The other seniors honored on the day were second baseman Amanda Villa, outfielder Daniele Nash, infielder Benavidez, third baseman Sardelich, outfielder Taylor Vidrine, catcher Alex Rodriguez and first baseman Richter.

St. Mary's got going earlier in Game 2, as it scored six runs on seven hits in the first. The Rattlers tacked on a seventh run in the second inning and broke through to secure the run-rule victory in the sixth when Benavidez produced a pinch-hit RBI single to end the game.

Nine Rattlers recorded at least one hit in the game, and a different Rattler was responsible for all eight RBIs.

Pitchers Kristi Rangel and Veronica Garcia combined to pitch a one-hit shutout. Rangel struck out two and yielded one hit in five innings, while Garcia fanned one in one inning.

Richter led the Rattlers with three RBIs on the day, while Sardelich batted .500 in a 3-for-6 effort with two RBIs and two runs scored.

St. Mary's will be back in action Thursday, when it takes on Midwestern State at 7 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
