No. 10 Softball pushes win streak to 11 with sweep of OPSU series

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GOODWELL, Okla. — St. Mary's bats came out firing over the weekend, as the 10th-ranked Softball Rattlers crushed Oklahoma Panhandle State to sweep the three-game series.

St. Mary's clinched the sweep with Saturday's 7-0 victory, which followed Friday's doubleheader blowouts, where the Rattlers prevailed 14-2 and 16-4.

Nicole Sardelich fueled the Rattlers' offensive fury, going 13 for 19 at the plate with seven RBIs and nine runs scored. Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone was just as prolific in the circle, going 2-0 over the series with two shutouts over 13 innings pitched. She pitched a one-hitter in a complete-game shutout in Game 3. Freshman Hope Russell picked up the other victory in Game 2.

Following the series, St. Mary's (28-7, 9-2 in Heartland Conference) pulled even with Texas A&M International in the loss column for second place in the conference. Lubbock Christian leads the Heartland at 13-1.

The Rattlers and Dustdevils will face off in a pivotal series beginning Thursday in Laredo, Texas.
