By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Make it a Sweet 16 for St. Mary's Mariana Rong.

The St. Mary's women's tennis sensation won the 16th Heartland Conference Player of the Week award of her career, it was announced Monday. It marks the fifth time this season she has been recognized with the honor, leaving her one short of tying the career-high six times she won it as a sophomore in 2012-13.

Last week, Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) — a graduate of O'Connor High School — went 5-0 on the court, winning in straight sets in each of her singles matches, where she went 3-0 against Metro State, Colorado Mesa and Colorado State-Pueblo. With the singles victories, she improved to 12-1 on the season in dual play and extended her win streak to six.

In doubles, she extended her winning streak with partner Cristina Lopez to 10 matches.

Rong competed in the No. 1 slot throughout, including in doubles, where she went 2-0 with victories against Colorado Mesa and Colorado State-Pueblo.

As a team, Rong's Rattlers are 12-1 on the season, having won their last 11 matches.

The No. 16-ranked Rattlers return to the court Thursday when they take on St. Edward's in a "Battle of the Saints" Senior Day at 3 p.m. at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.
