Rattler staff no-hits Newman in 3rd straight shutout of Jets

SAN ANTONIO — Coming off of a doubleheader win Sunday, No.9 St. Mary's Softball was able to complete the series sweep of Newman by a score of 6-0 Monday at The Park at St. Mary's.

The Jets (6-23, 2-10) were unable to score a single run in the series due to the onslaught of hitting and pitching of the Snakes.

Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) and Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) were once again instrumental in the triumph. Vidrine added yet another home run to her impressive week, giving her five in total for the week to go along with 10 RBIs. Gutierrez Touchtone was equally as good, recording yet another shutout performance and combining for a no-hitter with Veronica Garcia (Jr., Austin, Texas), who entered the game in the fifth inning in relief for the standout senior.

The encounter started as a stalemate for the first 3 ½ innings with neither team able to tack on a run. The Rattlers came closest to breaking the deadlock when Daniele Nash (Sr., San Antonio) was robbed of a hit to potentially bring in Miranda Medina (So., San Antonio).

It was not until the fourth inning when Vidrine started things off with her solo home run to left field to make the score 1-0. Gutierrez Touchtone was also productive on the hitting side of things when her single, which caused an error, eventually brought home LeeAnn Campos (Jr., San Antonio) to score the second run for the Rattlers.

In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Sydney Wellmann (Jr., Brenham, Texas) singled to bring home Hannah Fields (Jr., San Antonio) to push the StMU advantage to three. Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) would then hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) and Gutierrez Touchtone would do the same to bring home Vidrine to make it 5-0.

The Rattlers tacked on one more run when Sardelich brought home Nash with yet another sac fly.

The win was the sixth straight for coach Donna Fields' side, as they now have a record of 23-7 on the year with a 6-2 conference mark.

St. Mary's will now embark on a seven-game road trip where they will face Texas Woman's, Oklahoma Panhandle State and Texas A&M International before rerunning to San Antonio.
