SAN ANTONIO — A highly regarded matchup involving two of the country's top ranked teams saw the No. 16 St. Mary's Women's Tennis upset No. 9 Rollins Monday at Rohrbach Stadium, 5-4.

Coming off last week's win over Trinity, the Rattlers were poised to make a statement to the rest of the country on their home court.

They got off on the right foot by taking the majority of the doubles spoils.

The No. 1 team of Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) took a close decision over Etten and Olsson, 8-6.

The 8-6 score line was the final on the No. 3 court where Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) and Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg) came out on the losing end to Wookey and Brown.

The No. 2 team of Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston, Texas) gave the Rattlers the lead with their 8-4 victory over Davis and Vitanza.

With the lead heading into singles, the Rattlers went on to win three of the next four matches to clinch the overall win.

Two of the wins came in convincing fashion as No. 5 Timm defeated Brown and No. 3 Lopez defeated Davis, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

Rong, the reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week, suffered her first singles loss of the season, dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Etten at No. 1.

Kruseman accounted for one of the five victories as she won a straight-set 6-2, 7-5 victory over Olsson at No. 2.

No. 4 Denton battled to a three-set loss with Vitanza after taking a close first set, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. No. 6 Wiegand was also unfortunate in the third, losing close one to Wookey, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6.

Nonetheless, the victory was seized for the Snakes as they look to take the momentum into the weekend where they will face Southeastern Oklahoma at 9 a.m. Friday and Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m. Saturday, both at Rohrbach Stadium.

Their record now stands at 6-1 on the year.
