Homers spark #9 Rattlers' sweep of TAMUK

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The No. 9-ranked St. Mary's softball team was back in action as it completed a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 8-0 and 7-2 at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

The series was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was rescheduled due to rain.

The pitching and bats for the Snakes were in full flow in Game 1, as they cruised to the five-inning run-rule victory with a seven-run fourth inning. Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) also had a stellar outing, having her no-hit bid broken up in the final inning via a leadoff single. It was one of just two hits she surrendered and went along with her eight strikeouts.

The Rattlers were held scoreless in the first two innings before breaking free in the third when Hannah Fields raced home following a rundown of Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) that resulted in Sardelich getting caught stealing. St. Mary's then exploded for seven runs in the fourth with the help of a Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) grand slam to dead center field.

In the second of two games, the Rattlers continued their onslaught of home runs with Sardelich and Vidrine hitting back-to-back homes to start the game for an early 2-0 lead. Alex Rodriguez (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas) then singled and advanced on errors to eventually score, also bringing home Haley Richter in the process for a 4-0 advantage in the first inning.

With the bases loaded in the third inning, Daniele Nash (Sr., San Antonio) drew a walk to score LeeAnn Campos (Jr., San Antonio) before the Javelinas tacked on two runs of their own off of Hope Russell (Fr., Vidor, Texas) in the ensuing inning to cut the Rattlers' advantage to 5-2.

Kristi Rangel (Fr., Kingsville, Texas) came in to close out her hometown team, but not before Sydney Wellman (Jr., Brenham, Texas) brought home Alena Moreno (So., Pearland, Texas) and Sardelich in the sixth on a single to the right side.

The score would finish that way as the Rattlers improved their record to 20-7 on the year. Coach Donna Fields' team will look to stay on the winning track when it takes on Newman in a doubleheader on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
