Pair of 7th-inning comebacks fizzle as Rattlers drop two to LCU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 5-ranked St. Mary's Softball endured a pair of hard-luck losses to Lubbock Christian on Friday.

The Rattlers suffered through 4-2 and 2-1 losses — defeats in which St. Mary's had the go-ahead or tying runs on base in the seventh inning of each game.

Nicole Sardelich and Taylor Vidrine led off the seventh inning of Game 1 with a single and walk, respectively, only two have a pair of force outs and a caught stealing end the game with St. Mary's (17-7) on the losing end of a 4-2 defeat.

The closing scenes of Game 2 weren't much different, as Sardelich and Hannah Fields were on second and third base with one out and the Rattlers trailing by one. But the Rattlers were forced into an infield pop-up and an infield groundout to fall once again, this time 2-1.

The teams will close out the three-game series from Lubbock Christian's field at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Held scoreless going into the seventh inning of Game 2, the Rattlers seemed to spark a rally when Sardelich singled to left field to load the bases with no outs. Hannah Michel then drove in one run on a groundout in the ensuing at-bat, leaving the Rattlers with a golden chance to tie — or even win — with two runners remaining in scoring position and only one out. But the comeback fizzled as the nationally ranked Rattlers suffered their second defeat and fourth in a row.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone picked up the Game 1 loss after yielding four runs to drop to 9-3 on the season. Gutierrez Touchtone had a shutout going into the fourth inning, when Lubbock Christian exploded for three runs to get on the board and take a 3-2 lead over St. Mary's. The Rattlers did all their damage in the first, when Sydney Wellmann drove in two runs on a hard-hit single.
