No. 5 Softball overtakes LCU in run-rule in series finale

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 5 St. Mary's Softball exacted revenge on Lubbock Christian Saturday, run-ruling the series finale 11-3 after suffering two close losses in the series-opening doubleheader on Friday.

The win improved the No. 5 Rattlers to 18-7 on the season, breaking a four-game losing streak, and 3-2 in Heartland Conference play.

The win also marked the Chaps' first conference loss on the season as they dropped to 17-6 overall and 7-1 in league play.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) started things off early for the Rattlers, smacking a solo home run in the first.

Gutierrez Touchtone also did her due diligence on the hill, picking up the win after tossing 4 1/3 innings to put her at a 10-3 record on the season.

Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) doubled to make it 2-0 in the third and Gutierrez Touchstone again tacked on another RBI with a single for a 3-0 lead.

Back-to-back triples met the Chaps in the fourth after Taylor Vidrine's (Sr., San Antonio) two-RBI triple and Richter's RBI-triple gave the Snakes a 6-0 lead.

The Chaps charted a slim comeback, scoring a run in the fourth and two in the fifth but the Rattlers' five-run sixth inning gave the Chaps an early closing with the run-rule, 11-3.

The five-run, final inning spur saw RBIs from Richter, Alex Rodriguez (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas), Marcela Vasquez (Fr., El Paso, Texas) and Amanda Villa (Sr., San Antonio) and a Rattler run off a wild pitch.

The Rattlers' 10 hits for the game all came from the power of the lineup from the first four hitters with Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) going 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Vidrine going 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Richter going 3 for 4 with two runs scored with three RBIs and Gutierrez Touchtone going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Rattlers return home to face Texas A&M-Kingsville in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. at The Park at St. Mary's.
