National battle: No. 5 Softball drops two to No. 6 ASU

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANGELO, Texas — No. 5 Rattler Softball felt the pain of dropping two well-contested games to No. 6 Angelo State Wednesday, losing 3-2 in 10 innings and 4-0 in the second game after an 11-day absence from the field.

The doubleheader ended with both teams boasting impressive records as No. 5 StMU now sits with a 17-5 record while No. 6 ASU improved to 20-2.

St. Mary's Softball has three of its games canceled before taking the field at Angelo State's ASU Softball Field, playing for the first time since its contest against Rogers State on Friday, Feb. 27.

As two of the top teams in the nation, Wednesday's doubleheader saw the Rattlers and Rambelles go head-to-head with an extended 10-inning, walk-off heartbreaker in Game 1 for the Rattlers.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) gave StMU an early lead in the second with a solo home run, but the Rambelles were able to capture the lead with two-run third inning.

The Rattlers then tied it in the fifth after LeeAnn Campos (Jr., Helotes, Texas) scored on an attempted steal from Hannah Fields (Jr., San Antonio) to make a 2-2 ballgame.

Both teams were quieted until the bottom of the 10th when the Rambelles took the 3-2 decision off a walk-off, RBI-double.

Gutierrez Touchtone and starting ASU pitcher Kenedy Urbany both went the distance on the rubber as Gutierrez Touchtone was charged with the loss after 9 2/3 innings to drop to 9-2 on the season.

Catcher Jennifer Hernandez (So., San Antonio) and Gutierrez Touchtone each recorded a pair of hits for the Rattlers' six-hit game.

The national clash continued in Game 2 and the Rambelles showed its nationally ranked staff as Brandy Marlett recorded a no-hitter against the Rattlers to keep them out of contention for the win.

Hope Russell (Fr., Vidor, Texas) kept ASU scoreless for five innings but the Rambelles struck in the sixth for a four-run spur to win it, 4-0, to drop Russell to 8-3 on the season.

The Rattlers play their second Heartland Conference series against Lubbock Christian starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday in Lubbock, Texas.
