UA Fort Smith deals Women's Basketball tough home loss

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — A day that started with great promise was not to be for the St. Mary's women's basketball team as it came up short against a strong UA Fort Smith team, 72-48.

The Rattlers took an early lead by way of Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.), but the Lions (13-7, 11-2) took their lead shortly after and never looked back. They led for the remainder of the game, with their lead stretching to as many as 22.

The loss was St. Mary's fourth in as many games, as the Rattlers (12-9, 6-7) suffered just their second home defeat of the season. Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Mich), entering the day four rebounds short of breaking the school record for rebounds, also came up just short of her feat in grabbing two boards in the defeat.

In the loss, Kiara Etherigde (So., San Antonio) turned in an impressive 16-point performance to go along with her eight rebounds. Other key contributions came in the form of Elias with 10 points, six of those coming by way of 3-pointers. Kyra Littlejohn (Sr., Southfield, Mich.) added six points of her own.

This was still not enough as UAFS' Jasmine Brainard and Candice Followwell scored 12 points apiece to lead their team past St. Mary's. The pair were vital in the Lions' 40-percent shooting, a mark that sees them stay in second place in the Heartland conference.

Coach Jason Martens will return to action Feb. 12 in the "Battle of the Saints" as they take on St. Edwards in Austin, Texas. Pullins will have a chance to put her name in the history books in this highly regarded matchup.
