Pullins' record-breaking night helps end skid

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — Morgan Pullins enjoyed a record-breaking night Thursday — and it might have just gotten her St. Mary's Rattlers back on track.

Entering Thursday's "Battle of the Saints" showdown two rebounds shy of becoming the school's all-time leading rebounder, Pullins hauled in 11 boards to surpass Hall of Famer Erin Griffin for the top spot in the program's history.

Pullins — now with 905 career rebounds — added 19 points for her 16th double-double in 23 games as the Rattlers staved off St. Edward's 62-57 to snap a four-game losing streak.

Coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Heartland Conference foe UA Fort Smith, St. Mary's Women's Basketball needed the kind of spark that launched them to the victory over conference rivals St. Edward's, which leaves the Rattlers a half-game behind the Hilltoppers for the No. 2 seed in the race to the Heartland Conference Tournament.

Leading the effort offensively was Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.), who posted 22 points for the Lady Rattlers.

Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Mich.) and Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) both recorded double-doubles for the Rattlers (13-9, 7-7). Etheridge contributed 10 points and 11 boards.

The Rattlers maintained control for the majority of the first half, leading by as many as six points before the Toppers (13-8, 7-6) went on a late five-point run to give themselves their first lead of the game, 23-22, with 3:40 remaining in the half.

The lead traded off one more time during the opening frame. A 3-pointer from Danielle Vargas (Sr., Edinburg, Texas) and a jumper from Pullins sent the Rattlers to halftime with a 31-29 advantage over the Toppers.

Coming back from the break, the Rattlers came out hot, extending their lead all the way to 10 at the 13-minute mark.

The second half mirrored the first, seeing the Rattlers lead for the entirety of the frame. Late in the half, the Toppers battled back, pulling within three late in the game, forcing the Rattlers to hold on all the way down to the final seconds.

Two free throws from both Elias and Kealani Marquez (Fr., San Antonio) sealed the 62-57 victory for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers head to Odessa, Texas to take on Texas-Permian Basin for a Valentine's Day matchup on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
