New-look pitching staff shines for No. 16 Rattlers on Opening Day

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone and Hope Russell headline a St. Mary's pitching staff trying to make a name for itself following the graduation of longtime ace Emily Brittain.

They're off to a great start in 2015.

Gutierrez Touchtone fanned six in a 4-1 victory over Western Oregon in Friday's season opener, and Russell followed up that gem with a complete-game shutout in her collegiate debut to help fuel the No. 16-ranked Rattlers past New Haven 3-0 in the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic.

St. Mary's (2-0) will resume play with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning with an 11 a.m. matchup against East Central at the Lincoln Park North/South Complex.

Haley Richter's 2-for-3, 2-RBI effort highlighted the Rattlers' win in the front end of Friday's doubleheader, while Nicole Sardelich added a solo home run that put the Rattlers up 2-1 n the third inning.

Richter produced a mirror performance against New Haven, going 2 for 3 with two RBI, including an RBI single in the fifth that gave the Rattlers some needed cushion for a three-run lead that they maintained the rest of the way.

Taylor Vidrine scored twice and stole two bases in the game, while newcomer Sydney Wellmann added an RBI on a 1-for-3 outing at first base. Vidrine also had a stolen base against Western Oregon, giving her three for the day.

After the senior Gutierrez Touchtone surrendered a second-inning run to Western Oregon, she and Russell, a freshman, combined to pitch 12 scoreless innings on Opening Day.
