Rattlers unable to hold off Rogers State in OT

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — There was to be no revenge for the St. Mary's women's basketball team as it dropped a 70-60 overtime decision to Rogers State at Bill Greehey Arena on Thursday night.

Despite huge nights from forwards Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Mich.) and Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio), the Rattlers were unable to grab the victory, seeing their losing streak climb to three consecutive games.

The Rattlers had a chance to win the game late in regulation, but Pullins' attempt at the buzzer was just short, sending the contest into overtime.

Pullins turned in 22 points, 16 rebounds and an impressive four blocks, while her counterpart Etheridge chipped in 21 points to go along with her 11 boards.

Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) and Kyra Littlejohn (Sr., Southfield, Mich.) contributed to the cause adding seven and five points, respectively. Freshman Kealani Marquez (Fr., San Antonio) also scored five points on the night.

The Rattlers could not seem to find their rhythm early, seeing the Hillcats (7-13, 5-7) score their first three attempts from behind the arch. This trend continued for Rogers State throughout the first half, with the Hillcats shooting 38 percent from behind the line. The Rattlers remained close with some fantastic play from Etheridge down the stretch to go into the half trailing 31-25.

St. Mary's came out of the break flying with a quick 7-0 run to kick things off the second frame. The Rattlers kept their lead for most of the half, until a late surge propelled by Rogers State's Mikaila Newton, who led all scorers with 29 points on the night.

Newton and the Hillcats forced the issue in the extra frame and never looked back. Their 90 percent free-throw percentage was enough to stave off the Rattlers' late attempt to comeback, as they took their win total to seven on the year.

Coach Jason Martens' team now sees its record fall to 12-8 and 6-6 in the Heartland Conference.

St. Mary's will return to Bill Greehey Arena on Saturday afternoon to take on UA Fort Smith at 1 p.m.
