Rattlers thump OPSU, win Heartland regular-season title outright

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — On a day where a win would see the Rattlers' men's basketball team clinch the outright Heartland Conference regular-season title, they came out victorious 95-58 over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday at Greehey Arena.

The day also served as senior day, where the eight Rattler seniors were recognized for their achievements to the program.

Fitting as it was, the senior skill was on full showcase in the season finale for the Snakes as all eight St. Mary's players in their final year contributed to the points total on the night.

Leading the way was Kameron Pearce (Sr., Boise, Idaho) scoring a career-high 15 points and shooting over 55 percent from the field. Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Isaiah Matthews (Sr., Texas City, Texas) also contributed double-digit outputs as well, scoring 12 and 11, respectively. Matthews added five boards in the game.

The Gold and Blue led from the opening whistle as they dominated the opposing Aggies in every statistical category with the exception of free-throw percentage.
Matthews provided back-to-back highlight reel dunks before Binney equaled his senior counterpart, only with 3-pointers. The star of the half proved to be Pearce though, as he hit four 3-pointers in the opening frame, one of those beating the halftime buzzer to make the score stand at 54-30.

The second half was much of the same story, as the Rattlers extended their lead to as much as 38 points late in the second.

The Heartland Conference regular-season champs cruised the remainder of the affair, reaching their highest point total of the year in their final game. They claim the right to host the Heartland Conference tournament next week inside Bill Greehey Arena, where they will be the tournament's No. 1 seed. St. Mary's will open the tournament's semifinals round at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 6. The opponent will be determined through tiebreakers. The championship game will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7.

With the outright regular-season title, St. Mary's capped off its first regular-season championship since the 2004-05 season under Buddy Meyer. This marks the first regular-season title under head coach Jim Zeleznak, who in his 10 years at the helm has led StMU to four regional appearances, three Heartland postseason championships and was named the league's Coach of the Year following the 2009-10 season.

Zeleznak's team ends its impressive regular season with an 18-9 record, and a 15-5 mark in conference play. They will look to take the momentum of the win into the postseason.
