Minor's MAJOR Miracle! 30-foot buzzer-beater helps StMU advance

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — There was nothing minor about it.

Kriston Minor's miraculous buzzer-beater from 30 feet out propelled the St. Mary's Rattlers to the Heartland Conference Championship title game after a stunning 20-point comeback against the UA Fort Smith Lions to claim it 90-88 in overtime.

Minor's stunning buzzer-beater was released from the Rattler logo on the sideline, which spans well beyond 30 feet. The shot tied the game, forced overtime and electrified the largest Rattler crowd of the year.

Minor hit a total of four three pointers in the remaining five minutes in order to lead the Rattlers to overtime. He finished with 21 points on 8-19 shooting, going 5-13 from beyond the arc.

Senior Marvin Whitt (Birmingham, Ala.) also had a big game as he scored 22 points and contributed well in the early goings. Despite Whitt's efforts, the Rattlers trailed by 12 points at halftime.

The Lions' lead would swell to 20 points in the second half until the Rattlers came surging back with a combination of clutch shooting and frantic defense.

DeVaunta Thomas had a monstrous game for UTPB as he scored 26 points on 10-12 shooting. Thomas led the five Lion players who scored in double figures. Alex Cooper chipped in 18 points and was perfect from the free throw line at 11-11.

The Rattlers scrapped and clawed their way to the victory by creating 29 turnovers. They also had 15 steals, two blocks, and out-rebounded the Lions 36-33.

Their hustle statistics allowed the Rattlers to eventually come back into a game that seemed all but over with just 10 minutes remaining.

The resilience of the Rattler team can be attributed to both past playoff experience and a superior senior leadership. Despite key players senior Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) and senior Marvin Binney (Ontario, Toronto) fouling out in the late stages of the game, the Rattlers were able to claim the victory.

Binney finished with 16 points and six assists. Alexander finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

This cool play under pressure has been on display all year as the Rattlers are now 4-0 in overtime games this year.

The Rattlers will square off tomorrow against rival and No. 2 seed St. Edward's University at 4 p.m.

St. Edward's won their game 78-70 over Texas-Permian Basin. St. Mary's will attempt to capture their third Heartland Conference Championship in the past four years.
