Rattlers score 19 in opening Heartland Conference play 2-0

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Softball walked its way to a sweep of Friday's Heartland Conference-opening action against Rogers State.

The No. 5-ranked Rattlers scored 13 runs on 14 walks in a 13-0 blanking of the Hillcats in the opener before pulling away to win 6-1 in the nightcap on a frigid, 36-degree afternoon at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

Sydney Wellmann's three-run home run was one of five Rattler hits in the victory, as Wellmann drove in four runs to lead StMU's charge .Taylor Vidrine added three RBIs on a 2-for-2 day, while Nicole Sardelich walked four times and scored three runs despite not recording an official at-bat.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone picked up the victory in the circle to improve to 9-1 on the season after striking out two and not yielding a hit in three innings work. Gutierrez Touchtone was relieved by Veronica Garcia in the fourth with the Rattlers (17-3, 2-0) leading 13-0.

Game 2 was more difficult by contrast, as Rogers State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo blast. It wasn't until the third that the Rattlers got going, but once they did there was no stopping them.

Sardelich drove an RBI single to right-center field in the third to even the game at 1-1, and her two-RBI double in the capped off a three-run effort that saw the Rattlers jump ahead 4-1. They tacked on one more run in each the fifth and sixth innings to lead 6-1 by game's end.

Sardelich finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the game, while Vidrine and Haley Richter also enjoyed multi-hit days as each went 2 for 4.

Pitcher Hope Russell struck out three to improve to 8-2 in her freshman season.

St. Mary's will return to action Saturday when it will close out the three-game series at the Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for Noon, weather permitting.
