Rattler Invitational comes to close with split against TWU, TAMIU

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — After suffering only their second loss in the season Saturday night, St. Mary's Rattler softball wasted no time getting back to winning ways as its were victorious 8-0 in five innings over Texas Woman's University in Sunday's final day of the Rattler Invitational.

The run-rule victory saw a mixture of solid run production in the second and fourth inning and also some fortunate miscues from TWU pitching but nonetheless, the Rattlers were able to return to form after a disappointing setback Saturday night against Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Rattlers (15-3) couldn't keep the momentum going in the nightcap, however, as Texas A&M International topped St. Mary's 7-3 in a non-conference finale of the Rattler Invitational.

Three Rattlers made the All-Tournament Team after seeing St. Mary's go 4-2 at its annual event: pitcher Vianna Gutierrez (Sr., San Antonio), first baseman Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) and catcher Alex Rodriguez (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas) as a designated player.

Against TWU, both teams were held scoreless in their respective opening innings, but St. Mary's exploded for half of their total runs in the second frame to lead 4-0.

After the TWU starter Tori Bice walked Miranda Medina (So., San Antonio) and Alex Rodriguez (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas) to lead off the inning, Amanda Villa (Sr., San Antonio) reached base scoring Medina.

A pitching change saw Bailee Wortham in the circle but she did not fare much better as Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) brought home Sydney Paredes (So., San Antonio) on a fielder's choice to give the Rattlers their second run on the day.

They were not done yet as Sydney Wellman (Jr., Brenham, Texas) singled to left to bring home Sardelich after Wortham walked home another Rattler just before.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) was dominant as ever in the circle, retiring 15 of the 18 batters she faced on her way to a three-hit shutout. She helped her cause in the fourth inning as Sardelich and Wellman found themselves on second and third base before the winning pitcher brought them home with a double down the left field line.

Medina then brought home Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) who was on third after the Gutierrez double.

A leadoff walk in the fifth put Villa on base, where Hannah Michel (Fr., Giddings, Texas) came on to pinch run. Michel would later advance to second on a wild pitch and would later reach third on a Hannah Fields (Jr., San Antonio) bunt single.

The bases were loaded after a four-pitch walk putting Sardelich on first and the next pitch from TWU's Hickey was wild and Michel ended the game reaching home.

Gutierrez improved her pitching record to 8-1 on the season to mark her sixth complete game and second shutout.

Against TAMIU, Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) doubled in the first inning to give the Rattlers an early 1-0 lead, but a three-run effort in the third put the Dustdevils up 3-1. Vidrine came through again in the fifth inning, tying the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly that scored Nicole Sardelich. But TAMIU exploded for four runs in the sixth to effectively put the game away for good.
