SAN ANTONIO — In a matchup with South Central regional implications on the line, the Rattlers' Women's Tennis team fended off Midwestern State, 5-4, in action Saturday morning.

After losing 4-5 in last year's matchup, St. Mary's was determined to enact revenge on their Lone Star conference opponents. Both teams were ranked nationally coming into the day, the Rattlers'at  No. 16 and Midwestern at  No. 17.

The day started off with doubles play where the Rattlers  took the lead 2-1 on the overall score.

The advantage did not come easy as the No. 3 team of Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) and Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg) dropped the first decision of the day, 8-2, to the team of Schorlemmer and Boykin.

The tandem of Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston) leveled the match with their decisive 8-4 win over MSU's Pineda and Nochowicz at No. 2.

The doubles spoils would go down to the wire but the Rattlers would ultimately take the lead into singles as Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) battled to a hard 9-7 victory over Casey and Coffman.

The Rattlers' work was not done yet headed into singles action and matters would be made worse with Denton being forced to retire from her three-set affair.
With the score level at 2 apiece, St. Mary's rallied to win the next three matches to put the dual away.

Starting off, No. 4 Kruseman and No. 2 Lopez handily won their matches only losing 5 games between them, Kruseman winning over Pineda 6-0, 6-3 and Lopez defeating Schorlemmer 6-1, 6-1.

No. 1 Rong clinched the win for the Rattlers with two other matches playing. Rong was able to bounce back after dropping a close second set to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 over Casey to seal a big win for her team.

After the affair was decided, Timm and Joanie Bryant (Jr., San Antonio) lost the remaining matches to close the day. The Mustangs' (2-2) Coffman defeated Timm 6-4, 6-4 and the Rattlers' Bryant lost a close decision to Nochowicz after taking the first set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Nonetheless, the Rattlers' captured their fourth win on the year bringing their season record to 4-1. They will return to the Rohrbach Stadium Friday to face Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m.
