No. 4 Softball splits Day 2 action at Rattler Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Softball split the second day of action at the Rattler Invitational, holding off Tarleton State 6-2 before falling to Texas A&M-Commerce 1-0 in Saturday's nightcap.
 
In the victory, the No. 4-ranked Rattlers overcame a 2-0 first-inning deficit when Alex Rodriguez delivered a two-RBI single in the second to take a 3-2 lead that St. Mary's (14-2) would never relinquish at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
 
Rodriguez went 2 for 2 in the game, while Haley Richter scored two runs on one hit against Tarleton State (9-8).
 
Vianna Gutierrez improved to 7-1 on the season after striking out seven in six innings in the circle.
 
In the loss to A&M Commerce (11-6), Hope Russell (7-1) suffered her first collegiate defeat despite yielding no earned runs and striking out two. St. Mary's scattered just four hits in the game, two of which came from Sydney Wellmann, who was 2 for 3 on the day.
 
St. Mary's will close out the Rattler Invitational with two more games Sunday, starting with a 12 p.m. matchup vs. Texas Woman's. The Rattlers will also play Texas A&M International in a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
